Through vision, we receive up to 90% of information about the world, doctors noted in the program “Live healthy!”. At the same time, with age, people lose visual acuity, and this is normal. However, this raises another problem. Elena Malysheva and ophthalmologist Mikhail Konovalov told about a large study in which 70,000 people over 50 took part. It turned out that with a decrease in visual acuity, the participants in the experiment increased the risk of developing dementia three times.

As doctors noted, the main problem is that many vision pathologies are reversible, and a person may well regain the ability to see well and avoid the risks of dementia. However, not everyone turns to a specialist, because they believe that glasses do not suit them, they age, and because of the eyepieces, the eye will not train naturally. As a result, people doom themselves to both blindness and the risks of neurodegenerative diseases, doctors complained.

“We perceive vision with the cerebral cortex, and there is also a subcortical layer that forms emotions. When vision suffers, human behavior begins to dictate emotions, often this behavior is inadequate, ”warns Elena Malysheva. The subcortex works faster and reacts 60 thousand times more actively than the cerebral cortex, Mikhail Konovalov emphasized. As a result, a person’s sympathetic nervous system turns on: a person is either afraid, or running, or defending himself. In addition, the level of pressure rises, blood sugar rises. And if this happens to an elderly and even lonely person, then confusion begins, the world around changes, he ceases to understand how to live, this leads to dementia, Malysheva noted.

At the same time, today, even at 100 years old, you can have 100% visual acuity, the doctors said. The eye has a natural lens called the lens. In youth, this lens can change its curvature to correct vision: if the lens becomes flat, you can see better at a distance, if it changes curvature, you can see better near. As we age, the lens thickens, and it doesn’t matter whether a person trains the eye, or does exercises, this process will still happen, so everyone needs glasses over time. As Elena Malysheva noted, after 45 years this begins, and by the age of 60 everyone will already have a cataract (clouding of the lens).

In such a situation, an operation to replace the lens with an artificial one can correct the situation, which returns visual acuity. The operation takes 8-10 minutes. It is performed through a small puncture (2 mm) in the eye with a 0.9 mm needle. So do not neglect it, Elena Malysheva noted, so as not to lose your source of 90% of information about the world and not risk the development of dementia.
