What allows a man to maintain self-confidence under any circumstances? Social status, attractive appearance, sporting achievements, support from loved ones…

Or maybe something else? Let’s not waste time guessing, but ask the real experts in the psychology of men about it!

The Nature of Confidence

The results of a large-scale study on self-confidence, conducted with the participation of more than 6,000 amateur athletes from three countries of the world, are shared by Head&Shoulders:

  • 74% of those surveyed cite inner confidence as an important success factor in sports.
  • 77% athletes believe that self-confidence is as important or even more important than physical fitness.
  • 93% of respondents believe that the feeling of confidence increases when they look good.
  • 52% of study participants note the role of their coach in building a sense of sports confidence, and 14% recognize his influence on confidence in everyday life.
  • 50% respondents at crucial moments use auto-training to increase self-confidence.
  • 40% of respondents say that the example of successful athletes helps them feel confident and win.
  • 21% sportsmen are named among the main sources of self-confidence support of fans.
  • 92% study participants believe that sports confidence is best developed between the ages of 5 and 34.
  • 97% respondents are convinced that sports experience helps them become more confident in other areas of life.

According to the results of the study, a “pyramid” was built, showing on what factors the self-confidence of athletes is based:

  • first (basic) level: a realistic assessment of their capabilities and preparation;
  • second level: past successes, support from others, example of colleagues;
  • third level: setting goals and focusing on achieving them;
  • fourth level: calmness, optimistic expectations, auto-training;
  • fifth (upper) level: attractive appearance.

Professor Daniel Wann, the author of the Head&Shoulders study, comments: “Playing sports has a huge impact on the development of self-confidence in all areas of life. Moreover, we are talking about classes as such, and not about outstanding sports successes. Thus, it is not at all necessary to be an Olympic champion in order to enjoy self-confidence.».
