A sedentary lifestyle is constantly condemned, since hypodynamia (lack of movement) negatively affects human health. But often the constant and prolonged sitting that office workers may face is underestimated. And it becomes the cause of serious ailments that worsen the quality of life and in some cases become the cause of death. Which ones, told surgeon of the highest category, head of the surgical department of the clinical diagnostic center “Medincenter” Elena Solovieva.
“Modern research shows that inactivity (laziness) is the cause of an increasing number of annual deaths. A sedentary image reduces the tone of vital centers and increases intra-abdominal pressure against the background of stagnation in the circulatory system,” says Elena Solovieva.
With a sedentary lifestyle, the doctor notes, the metabolism in the body is disturbed, the level of bad cholesterol in the blood rises, the functioning of the heart muscle worsens, which can subsequently cause a number of other more serious diseases.
What are the consequences?
If a person does not regularly engage in any physical activity, the surgeon Solovyova says that he has an increased risk of diseases such as:
- heart disease (including coronary heart disease, impaired venous outflow in the lower extremities with possible deep vein thrombosis and heart attack);
- metabolic syndrome (characterized by an enlarged waist circumference due to excess abdominal fat and abnormal plasma glucose concentrations);
- type 2 diabetes;
- certain types of cancer, including colon cancer. It is due to the fact that there is stagnation of blood in the pelvic area, there is a deterioration in the functioning of the intestines. The uterus and mammary glands in women also suffer;
- increased feelings of depression and anxiety.
All this entails failures in other body systems, problems begin to accumulate and lead to deterioration, chronic processes – varicose veins, hemorrhoids, hypertension and others.
What to do?
Elena Solovieva notes that it is quite possible to reduce the harm from a sedentary lifestyle. And the recommendations are quite simple and accessible to everyone. So, for example, says the surgeon Solovyova, one of the most effective tips is to follow the generally recommended rate of steps of 10 thousand. It is also worth replacing the elevator rides in the house with climbing the stairs – this will ensure physical activity and make the muscles work, improve blood circulation. Also, the doctor advises not to spend it entirely at the table during the lunch break, but to partially use this time for walking in the fresh air – this way the movement will be ensured and the body will receive a portion of oxygen. Meetings with colleagues are best done standing up. Attention should also be paid to various activities in the gym – for example, swimming will be a good solution – it has a great effect on all body systems: bone, respiratory, cardiovascular and digestive. At the same time, swimming is well suited to almost everyone without restrictions. If in doubt, you should consult your doctor.
Do not forget about regular medical examinations. Elena Solovieva recommends regular check-ups with doctors such as:
This will allow you to detect any changes in time and prevent their development to more critical stages. After all, the sooner treatment is started, the higher the chances of a full recovery.
