According to experts, handwriting is extremely beneficial for children. Therefore, it is important to stimulate their desire to do so. Why and how to do it, told specialist of the highest category, clinical psychologist of the Institute of Child and Adult Neurology and Epilepsy named after Saint Luke Elena Makarova.

Why is it important and useful for children?

One of the main advantages of writing by hand is the development of fine motor skills, the specialist notes. “When writing, our brain functions in a very coordinated way, this develops its separate areas that are responsible for small movements, for controlling them. Also, writing contributes to the development of neighboring areas that affect the formation of speech. The processes of attention, memory, and thinking are involved in writing,” emphasizes Elena Makarova.

Thus, the specialist says, the brain develops in a complex way. In fact, writing by hand becomes a mild stimulant for the development of all mental functions.

“We are talking not only about the intellectual, but also about the motivational component. A child who writes has a goal, creates something,” says Elena Makarova.

In addition, when writing by hand, the child develops diligence, attentiveness, accuracy. “The task of parents is to create favorable conditions for the formation of these qualities. After all, they are necessary for every person in any activity. Handwriting creates and trains them,” notes Elena Makarova.

The specialist adds that in the process of writing there is a complete involvement, all areas of the brain are involved, a whole system is formed. So, for example, the visual areas are responsible for fixing the words and images of letters, auditory – for sounds. Only when mastering a letter by hand, children often first say everything aloud. The letter itself regulates muscle tone, stimulates to perform different movements. In parallel, there is an analysis of what has been written.

How can I increase my child’s interest in handwriting?

The psychologist recalls that parents play a leading role in introducing children to writing. It is important for adults not only to voice their positive attitude towards the idea of writing by hand, but also to create such an atmosphere that in the course of the lesson the child will be appropriately disposed and experience only positive emotions. “If a child does not like to write, the process is difficult for him, causes disgust and rejection, this indicates that something in learning is going wrong. Therefore, a different strategy should be chosen. After all, a child should receive satisfaction from writing by hand, pride in their achievements, joy for themselves, ”says Elena Makarova.

Learning to write will go naturally and correctly if, by the time the child takes a notebook and a pen, certain skills have already been formed. So, he should be able to work with a brush in a circle and draw wavy lines, depict straight lines in different directions: vertically, sideways and horizontally. In addition, in his arsenal should be the ability to work with shading.

Parents can stimulate a child’s interest in writing, for example, through notes to each other and joking messages. It is also worth drawing more often – together or entrusting the creation of certain plots. Drawings and messages can be hung in conspicuous places, the same refrigerator. And do not forget to often praise the child for any efforts. According to psychologists, the pleasure that a child receives from the image of certain images later develops into an interest in writing.

You can also stimulate the necessary skills by performing simple motor skills exercises, which then the child will further develop with the help of writing. Suitable for working with mosaics, picking up puzzles, sorting out small parts of toys, as well as simple knitting.
