Osteoporosis is common: according to statistics from the International Osteoporosis Foundation, it affects one third of women over the age of 50 and one in five men of the same age threshold. Against this background, many are interested in how to recognize the disease and what are the methods of its prevention.

Alexander Myasnikov in his program “About the Most Important Thing”, he noted that usually people are puzzled by the issues of osteoporosis when old age is already approaching, and even some violations are visible – for example, growth has become a little lower due to changes in the vertebrae, heartburn may begin due to twisted spine , reduced mobility and increased risk of fractures. Then the search for drugs begins.

In fact, as Alexander Myasnikov noted, osteoporosis should be prevented much earlier than a person crosses the line of old age. In general, this problem is pediatric. After all, a person gains bone mass up to 15 years. Whoever has a large amount of it during this time will be better protected. With age, even if he starts to lose it, then he has a chance not to get acquainted with osteoporosis, since the initial accumulations will be enough to withstand all the loads. Bone loss with age is affected by a decrease in estrogen in women and testosterone in men.

A small accumulation of bone mass, Dr. Myasnikov noted, in childhood is due to the fact that children drank a lot of sweet soda, if a lot of sweets, sat without much movement, did not attend physical education with the consent and permission of their parents. It is worth remembering here that once the bones have formed, nothing can be done with them. The only option is to prevent bone loss.

Preventive measures

For women who have not yet reached menopause, the doctor recommended taking a gram of calcium per day, after the onset of menopause, the dosage increases to one and a half grams. Moreover, you need to get calcium not only from tablets, there should be a ratio of 50 to 50 – half from a tablet, half from food: milk, cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt.

Enumeration of tablets with calcium is fraught with the fact that it will begin to accumulate in the kidneys, which will lead to the development of stones.

Also, as a preventive measure, you should add movement to your life. But not thoughtlessly. So, for example, swimming and running will not help strengthen bones, dumbbells must be present.

The doctor advised for prevention to lose weight, move, take bisphosphonates, if they were prescribed by a doctor. And, of course, to talk with children about the importance of observing the daily routine and nutrition in order to lay the foundation for the health of the skeleton from childhood.

What can be the problem with calcium deficiency?

Osteoporosis affects the worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It should be understood that calcium levels can be reduced not only due to osteoporosis, but also due to diseases of the parathyroid gland, which regulates it. If there is a problem with it, there will be a calcium deficiency. A person in such a situation can neither raise a glass nor sleep normally due to convulsions. In addition, the risks of not only COPD, but also heart problems, are aggravated.

Additional measures

The opinion that coffee can provoke osteoporosis, Alexander Myasnikov noted, is erroneous. On the contrary, it acts rather positively.

Calcium foods and vitamin D supplements are really helpful for prevention. But you must act carefully so as not to get an overabundance. It is better to consult a doctor.

Frequent fractures increase the risk of osteoporosis. They themselves become its consequence, but besides, if the integrity of the bone was previously violated, then this is a risk of developing the disease in the future. So it’s worth warning them as much as possible. In the elderly, it is extremely important to pay attention to the problem of falls, since osteoporosis has no symptoms, it is most often found out when a person has fallen and broken something. Older people are at high risk of hip fracture and disability.
